Sunday 13th November
Diwali - the festival of lights - is celebrated during the months of October/November by Hindus and Sikhs around the world. 2005 saw the first large scale Diwali celebration organised in the Stow Hill area with people of many nationalities coming together for a large Diwali 'party' at the Burleigh Academy on Llanthewy Road.
Diwali marks the start of the Hindu new year and the name comes from the Sanskrit word "Dipawali" meaning 'a string or garland of lights'. It is a joyful and colourful festival when the home is decorated with fresh flowers, garlands and lights. Brightly coloured patterns are used to decorate floors, candles and lamps are lit to represent the spirit of God as truth and light and fireworks are set off to mark the event. Families and friends come together to celebrate Diwali. They begin with worship, best clothes and jewellery are worn, gifts and sweets called 'barfi' and 'matiyeh' are distributed during the five-day long festival. These are are few of the images of this years celebrations. To view Photo Album >>>
